Ampa Mall, Chennai

I visited the Ampa Mall on Dec 26, 2009. I cannot imagine how they can throw the mall open at this stage. It is probably crass commercialism driving the decisions.

The drive up to the parking lot would send anyone spinning, literally. I had do climb 7 levels before finding a parking space. You'll be surprised to note that each level can accommodate about 25 cars.

The elevators from the parking into the malls are'nt working. We had to climb down a level and directly get into the food court. The entry had a soft barricade, requiring us to walk through a metal detector. When I walked past, the metal detector wailed, putting a siren to shame. Surprisingly the guard waved me through. So much for security.

The mall fell well short of my expectations. After being portrayed as one of the largest malls etc, it was a huge disappointment. Other elevators were also not working, leaving us at the mercy of one escalator (in each direction) to move between levels.

The management, not wanting to take any chances, had the escalators manned. Which is probably good. The guard who was manning the escalator restricted the number of people traversing on the escalator. That was out of ordinary. The clinchers were (a) the restriction was only for upward movement and not downward (b) the number of passengers each time was not consistent. I wonder what rule he follows.

The skywalk and the movie theatres are yet to make their appearance. Hence no comments on them.

I seriously hope that

(a) the parking access is streamlined and vacancy highlighted
(b) the elevators are commissioned at the earliest
(c) Security measures imposed correctly, or done away with. At the moment, it is a big farce.
